Daniel Farke’s Leeds United sentence Birmingham to yet another loss, and Wayne Rooney is fired.
Nobody should be particularly shocked that Wayne Rooney was fired by Birmingham City given his dismal managerial record.
The main surprise here must be that he was appointed in the first place, considering that John Eustace, the previous occupant, wasn’t performing poorly in the role.
Like many owners, people in authority have a tendency to become blinded by the idea of having a well-known figurehead in command.
The sooner teams recognise this, the better. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are two more members of England’s golden generation who blatantly lack the skills necessary to be elite managers.
According to the Daily Mail, Rooney’s disastrous reign came to an end with Birmingham’s 3-0 loss against Daniel Farke’s Leeds United, the team’s ninth defeat in 15 games since he took command.
The team was riding high in the Championship when the former Man United icon took control, sitting in sixth place. Now, they are in 20th place, six points above the bottom three.
If nothing else, the Birmingham owners will have learned a vital lesson by hiring and firing England’s all-time best goalscorer.
They have at least been instrumental in ending Rooney’s terrible reign early, so whomever is hired in still has most of the transfer window to restructure his team and, ideally, lead them to a successful conclusion to a turbulent campaign.
