Chelsea just paid £87 million to hijack Manchester United’s objective today, exactly like they did with Moses Caicedo.
Chelsea tries to “hijack” a Manchester United transfer, but the deal is rejected, costing them £87 million.
The Sun claims that Chelsea is pursuing Silva because they see the 20-year-old as a possible building block for the back. After watching him in Benfica’s 3-0 victory over Famalicao on Friday, they have been scouting him for a few weeks, although Sir Jim Ratcliffe of United also considers him a target.
However, Chelsea has already begun talks with the Portuguese side in an attempt to recruit Silva before United and Liverpool do. After their offer of £52 million was rejected, the Blues were told that they would have to complete Armando Broja’s £87 million release clause in order to get him to go.
The Portugal international has three and a half years left on his Benfica contract. With over £1 billion in transfers made since Todd Boehly and co. arrived at Stamford Bridge, the Portuguese club has a great chance to force Chelsea to pay another enticing amount in the January transfer window.
Manchester United and Chelsea are both interested in Benfica’s Antonio Silva.
Similar cautionary words were sent to potential suitors by Benfica manager Roger Schmidt, who stated that a deal cannot be finalised until the club’s release clause is activated. During a news conference, he answered when questioned about Silva and midfielder Joao Neves, saying, “I talk to them every day, all of them.”
We have high expectations for Benfica because the season is still early. We will not allow these players to leave because they are valuable to us and they do not want to leave. That is beyond question.
