LIVERPOOL
A player previously deemed a disappointment at Liverpool, having played only 13 minutes, is now hailed as the ‘top player in his league.’
A player previously considered a disappointment at Liverpool, having played only 13 minutes for the club, is now being recognized as the best player in his league.
In the summer transfer window of 2022, Liverpool faced a slew of injuries to their midfielders, with key players like Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita sidelined. Consequently, manager Jurgen Klopp opted to enter the transfer market to address the midfield crisis.
Liverpool sought a solution by bringing in Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo during the summer transfer window of 2022. Arthur arrived on a season-long loan from Serie A giants Juventus, with Liverpool reportedly paying a loan fee of £3.9 million for his services. The midfielder made his debut for Liverpool in the Champions League, facing a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Napoli.
Arthur’s stint at Liverpool was brief, as he played a mere 13 minutes, marking both his debut and final appearance for the Anfield club. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to a long-term injury, prompting his return to Juventus at the conclusion of his loan deal.
At the commencement of the 2023/24 season, Arthur embarked on a new chapter with Fiorentina, where he began to rejuvenate his career. His agent, Federico Pastorello, expressed happiness for Arthur’s progress in a recent statement to Radio Serie A. Pastorello highlighted the challenges Arthur faced in the previous season, including joining Liverpool late in the transfer window, missing training, and enduring a serious injury.
“Fiorentina were good at seeing the opportunity. And, today, Arthur is perhaps the best player in the league.”
Federico Pastorello, Arthur’s agent, commented further, stating, “20 million euros? I would say (he could leave Juventus) for even more. (The clause) was included for the right reasons, and there’s also the salary aspect, which doesn’t align with La Viola’s parameters. However, we’re only halfway through the journey.”
He continued, “Our focus is on maintaining this momentum, and at the end of the season, we’ll assess the situation. I can affirm one thing: Arthur is thriving in Florence. Even off the pitch, the fans have embraced him in an extraordinary manner. This, especially as a former Juventus player, was not at all guaranteed.”
