Klopp has now commented on the discussion surrounding Mo Salah’s return to England for treatment following his injury at AFCON.

Jurgen Klopp has defended Mohamed Salah’s decision to return to Liverpool for treatment as he recovers from a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Initial hopes were that Mohamed Salah’s withdrawal from Egypt’s second group stage game against Ghana was merely precautionary due to slight discomfort. However, it was later revealed by his agent that the issue was more serious, resulting in Salah spending up to 28 days on the sidelines. With his club manager previously suggesting that the 31-year-old would return to Liverpool for treatment, Salah’s return to fitness and potential representation for Egypt in the final stages of the tournament remain contingent on his recovery progress. Notably, Salah contributed a goal and an assist in Egypt’s 2-1 victory over Mozambique in their opening match before sustaining the injury during the subsequent draw against Ghana.

Liverpool secured their spot in the Carabao Cup final against Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea at Wembley Stadium in February following a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage, ultimately progressing with a 3-2 aggregate victory. With the highly-anticipated clash on the horizon, the Reds are eager to have Mohamed Salah available for selection against his former club.

Jurgen Klopp found himself in the position of having to clarify the circumstances surrounding Salah’s return to Merseyside, emphasizing that both Egypt and Liverpool share the same goal of ensuring Salah’s swift return to fitness. Addressing concerns of disloyalty towards Egypt, Klopp stated, “I cannot be part of the discussion; Egypt and Liverpool have exactly the same interest. We want Mo Salah fit as quickly as possible.”

“Bringing him here [to Liverpool] is not about taking him away from Egypt but about providing the best medical treatment,” Klopp emphasized. He stressed that if Salah remained with the national team and couldn’t receive proper treatment, it would only prolong his recovery, especially if Egypt progresses further in the tournament. Refuting any notion of Salah’s disloyalty towards his nation, Klopp staunchly defended his star player.
