Frenkie de Jong gives a Top premier club green light, and their fans can hide their joy
According to reports, Frenkie de Jong is thinking about staying at Barcelona, which might put Manchester United and Arsenal on notice.
The 26-year-old has been a long-term priority for the Red Devils, and in 2022, he nearly reunited at Old Trafford with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.
The midfielder finally made the decision to remain at the Nou Camp despite United and Barca having agreed on a sum that might reach £73 million.
But after five years, the 54-cap Netherlands international may now leave Catalonia because, according to reports, he is unhappy with the club’s goals and lack of awards (one LaLiga and one Copa del Rey victory).
Journalist Lluis Canut, who is close to the player’s entourage, stated on Esport3’s “Onze” show: “De Jong has not given the go-ahead.
“However, he is no longer ruling out leaving Barcelona as he did two seasons prior, when Manchester United expressed interest in him playing under Ten Hag, the coach who had him at Ajax.
“De Jong is currently feeling a little let down by the circumstances at Barca since he hasn’t been able to live up to the hype that was created when he signed significant titles.
“De Jong would be willing to leave Barca at the end of this season.”
Meanwhile, the Blaugrana have ‘doubts’ about De Jong, according to Spanish news source Relevo, and may consider selling him to improve their financial situation.
The revelation will undoubtedly pique United’s interest, but Arsenal might also be persuaded to move for the Eredivisie winner of 2019.
That’s because he revealed in 2019 that he wanted to play for Arsenal before moving to Barcelona.
“In my mind I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route,” he said to Voetbal International.
“But then again, if you can go directly to Barcelona, then you are right where you want to be. Faster than you ever dared to dream.”
It’s possible that the Gunners will need a new central midfielder during their busy summer at the Emirates.
