Virgil van Dijk breaks an all-time Liverpool record vs Brentford in his 250th appearance

In his 250th game for the Reds, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has shattered an all-time club record.

At the Brentford Community Stadium this afternoon, Jurgen Klopp’s team defeated Brentford 4-1. Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Mohamed Salah—who is back—all found the scoresheet.

However, there was one incident during the game: Christian Norgaard, a midfielder for Brentford, unintentionally landed his entire weight on Diogo Jota, causing him to leave with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Curtis Jones also had to leave due to an injury, while Nunez left at halftime for an undisclosed reason.

However, the victory and Van Dijk’s 250th appearance for the team since joining from Southampton in January 2018 were reasons for celebration.

With the exception of an anterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of the game for nearly the whole 2020–21 season, the Dutchman has been a constant in Klopp’s Liverpool team, which has grown into one of the most powerful teams in English football.

His 250th Reds shirt appearance came on Saturday, and he easily beat the previous Liverpool record in the process.

Van Dijk has been on the winning side 171 times in his first 250 appearances for Liverpool, more than any other player, according to a post by OptaJoe’s Michael Reid.

With the exception of Ian Rush, Alan Kennedy, and Steve McMahon, who made the most of their combined appearances prior to the Premier League era commencing in 1992, the players who make up the most of the top 10 list have all played for Klopp.

“I had no idea I was playing my 250th game for Liverpool, but it’s a proud moment, a proud moment for me and my family,” he stated in an interview with TNT Sports following the game. To many more, I say.

“This was a difficult game for a number of reasons; it was going to be difficult even without all of the injuries sustained during play. The last two times we were here, we lost.

“They complicate things for you by being forthright, persistent, and unwavering in their beliefs. We had to be prepared for combat.

“Obviously with the goals we scored, that helps massively as well.”
