Liverpool handed huge Xabi Alonso blow following Bayern Munich announcement

Thomas Tuchel’s resignation from Bayern Munich has cast doubt on Liverpool’s ability to pursue Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Bayern Munich, is set to depart the team at the end of the current campaign, according to a report from Sky Germany.

“After good and fair discussions, FC Bayern and Thomas Tuchel have decided to part ways at the end of the season,” according to the Florian Plettenberg report.

It is hardly surprising that Bayern is firing Tuchel given their recent performance and league standing, as the German powerhouses have always had a “cut throat” approach to managing.

Although this is great news for the Bundesliga, it actually has a somewhat negative effect on Liverpool since, as Sky Germany reports, Bayern Munich will prioritise Xabi Alonso come summertime.

“The 42 y/o is now the absolute top candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season,” says Plettenberg.

Alonso is reportedly going to replace Jurgen Klopp, who is also leaving his position at the conclusion of the season. However, given how well Alonso is playing in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, a move to Bayern would be more desirable.

The Spaniard stated at a press conference that he is not yet considering the “next step” in response to questions about the Liverpool position.

“To be honest, I’m not thinking about the next step right now,” he stated. When I consider my current situation, I believe that I am in a wonderful position that I like.”

One of the main considerations for Alonso to perhaps transfer to the Premier League was said to be his relationship with Liverpool.
