Liverpool broke a remarkable 128-year record in their win over Luton, no club will match it for a long time

Liverpool’s victory over Luton Town in the comeback game broke a long-standing record.

The goal for Jurgen Klopp’s team on Wednesday night as they welcomed Luton to Anfield was to increase their lead over the top four teams in the Premier League to four points.

But in the twelfth minute, Chiedozie Ogbene’s goal startled Liverpool.

The Reds picked up the pace in the second half, winning 4-1 thanks to goals from Harvey Elliott, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Virgil van Dijk.

When Diaz broke the record 3-1, he became the sixth forward for Liverpool to score ten goals or more this season, shattering a record that had stood for 128 years.

Michael Reid of Opta reports that this marks the first time since the 1895–1896 season that Liverpool has had five players with ten or more goals.

In Liverpool’s 39th game of the season, Reid posted on social media: “After Salah (19), Jota (14), Núñez (13), and Gakpo (11), Luis Díaz is the fifth player to score 10+ goals for Liverpool this season.

“This is the earliest into a season as a top-flight club that #LFC have ever had 5 different players reach 10+ goals.”

He added: “The only two seasons Liverpool had five players on 10+ goals sooner than this were 1893-94 (32nd game) and 1895-96 (24th) – when they were in the second tier.”

“Tonight is one of those nights where it is difficult to stop talking,” Klopp remarked in a post-match statement. I’m overjoyed.

“We had to put aside the reality that we were behind 1-0 and focus on improving the counter-press by using our strengths. A thunderstorm occurred in the second part. Whoa.

When Liverpool plays Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, everyone will be watching.

In the meantime, if Manchester City and Arsenal respectively defeat Bournemouth and Newcastle United, they will have an opportunity to close the gap between them and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
