Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, scored the game-winning header in the last moments of extra time to lead his team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.
Van Dijk appeared to have given Liverpool the late advantage when he deftly sidestepped Chelsea’s defenders in the box and connected with a set-piece cross that Andy Robertson effectively delivered. The celebration was short-lived, though, as VAR stepped in and disqualified the goal.

The decision was made after VAR authorities found that Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell had been prevented from closing down Van Dijk by Wataru Endo, who had originally been called offside. This resulted in the goal being disallowed. Liverpool continued to attack in spite of the loss, moving men forward in an attempt to make a breakthrough.
Chelsea, however, came dangerously close to taking the lead when Conor Gallagher struck hard and rattled the post, giving Liverpool pause. Still, Klopp’s team maintained their defensive resolve, foiling Chelsea’s attempts to create scoring opportunities in the last moments of the game.
