Man Utd ‘assessing’ Gareth Southgate as potential Erik ten Hag replacement as three-man shortlist revealed
According to a fresh report, Gareth Southgate and two other individuals are being evaluated as Erik ten Hag’s possible replacements should he leave Old Trafford in the summer.
After United’s recent 3-1 loss to Manchester City, which left his team languishing in sixth position, 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool, Ten Hag is under extreme pressure.
Earlier this week, it was reported that United’s players are becoming “increasingly doubtful” about the Dutch manager’s future after this summer, with many believing INEOS would fire him and appoint a new one.
ESPN, on the other hand, claims that while Ten Hag’s future has not yet been decided, “options are being explored to gauge the credentials and availability of possible replacements.”
In actuality, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his colleagues are listed as evaluating Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Frank, and England manager Gareth Southgate.
At Brighton, De Zerbi, who is being watched by several clubs, has won over many spectators, and at United, Thomas Frank’s adoption of a data-led strategy has won over supporters.
Given his position at England and his indecision about his future after this summer’s Euros, Southgate is seen as a “outsider” for the position.
However, the article traces his background to Dan Ashworth, who is on the verge of taking over as United’s next sporting director. Ashworth was employed by the FA in the past.
ESPN has also been informed by sources that further managers and coaches are under consideration. INEOS is keen to avoid being caught off guard this summer since high-profile managers are still being connected to moves.
