One of the most important man is coming back to Liverpool

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the ownership group of Liverpool, met with Michael Edwards on Sunday in Boston with the aim of convincing the former sports director of the team to take a leading role in directing the club’s future once Jürgen Klopp leaves Anfield. Among the senior executives were president Mike Gordon and principal owner John W. Henry held talks with Edwards about his possible comeback to the team from which he left in 2022. The 44-year-old Edwards is now a consultant with the sports advisory firm Ludonautics, and FSG believes he is the best person to lead Liverpool through its transition when Klopp steps down after nine incredibly successful years in charge.

But to lure Edwards back to Liverpool, Liverpool would have to give him a bigger role than just sporting director. Edwards has turned down many offers from other teams, notably Chelsea, since leaving Liverpool, but he is still much sought after because of his crucial contribution to the team’s development under Klopp’s leadership. His first rejection of FSG’s offer to return to his role as sporting director in January shows how much he wants a more powerful role—possibly as head of football operations—before he considers coming back to the team.

If Edwards comes back, he would be in charge of the analytics and recruitment departments and would be crucial in selecting the future sports director and manager of Liverpool, with Xabi Alonso emerging as the front-runner to replace Klopp.FSG’s determined attempts to re-engage Edwards highlight their faith in his ability to steer the club towards the future as Liverpool’s football hierarchy takes shape in the coming weeks.

The picture has changed for Liverpool’s next sporting director with Klopp’s approaching retirement; instead of just supporting an experienced manager, the new director will be responsible for leading the team through a transitional time.

Although Alonso is still the front-runner for the managerial position, Liverpool wants to honour his dedication to the Bundesliga season for Bayer Leverkusen by not making any public advances, in contrast to Bayern Munich’s strategy. While discussing, Sporting coach Rúben Amorim also emerges as a viable option for Liverpool, signaling a pivotal juncture in the club’s leadership transition.
