Richard Keys calls VAR a ‘waste of time’ when one person is on the pitch following Liverpool vs Man City

Richard Keys feels that, given the contentious conclusion to Liverpool’s tie with Manchester City, video assistant refereeing is a “waste of time” as long as there is only one official on the pitch.

Liverpool and Man City drew 1-1 at Anfield on Sunday, a thrilling match that the home team felt was stolen from them.

After dominating the second half, Jurgen Klopp’s team appeared to be about to get their due when, in the 98th minute, Alexis Mac Allister was taken down in the penalty area after being challenged by Jeremy Doku.

When the ball went out of play, referee Michael Oliver signalled that play should continue before conferring with video assistant referee Stuart Attwell.

The video assistant (VAR) determined that Doku challenged for the ball in a “reasonable” position and got it first, even though replays seemed to show Doku catching Mac Allister in the ribs with a high foot.

Both Klopp and the Liverpool players and supporters found the decision hard to accept.

After the game the Liverpool boss argued: “This situation, in all positions on the pitch, is 100 per cent a foul. It’s 100 per cent a foul and a yellow card.

“It’s a penalty for all football people. It’s a penalty for football people, if you think it’s not one then maybe you’re not a football fan.”

Richard Keys, a football presenter, expressed agreement with Klopp’s opinion on X, implying that referee Oliver believes he is superior to VAR.

The following is what Keys wrote on X on Monday: “What we saw happen at Anfield yesterday – & most weeks elsewhere – will keep happening until someone in VAR finds the courage to tell [Michael] Oliver that he’s made a mistake.”

This season and last, I have stated as much. He believes that he is unaccountable. When he is on the pitch, VAR is a waste of time.”
