Alan Shearer makes ‘intriguing’ claim about Liverpool’s search for new manager

Intriguingly, Alan Shearer has predicted that Liverpool will look to replace Jurgen Klopp.

The final match between Klopp and his team at Anfield is quickly approaching as he looks to cap off his illustrious tenure on Merseyside with as many titles as possible.

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup in February, but an FA Cup defeat at the hands of Manchester United ended their dreams of a historic quadruple.

Klopp’s team is still vying for a Premier League championship; they are tied for first place with Arsenal, who play Manchester City this coming weekend. Liverpool’s top managerial target may face them in the Europa League final when they play Atalanta in the quarterfinals.

After a remarkable season in which he is undefeated in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly the first-choice manager of Fenway Sports Group to succeed the German.

Alonso is being pursued by other teams, so Liverpool may have a difficult time persuading him to come back to Anfield.

The legendary player for England, Shearer, thinks the Spaniard will be first in line for any major position this summer and that more teams will fire their present manager at the end of the campaign.

He wrote for The Athletic: “The really intriguing thing is Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are looking for a new manager ahead of next season and I don’t think they’re the only big jobs that will become available this summer.

“With the job that Xabi Alonso is doing this season at Bayer Leverkusen, he’ll have a pick of jobs if he wants them. That’s the obvious link that loads of people have already made, given Alonso played for Liverpool.”

Shearer thinks Liverpool may have an advantage in the chase for Alonso because of their shared history with the player.

“It’s Liverpool Football Club, one of the giants of world football,” he previously told The Rest Is Football podcast.

“Depending on clauses and everything else, I would think that would be too good for him to turn down if he was offered it. You’ve got to have belief in who you are and I would imagine that Xabi will do.”
