Two new favourites to become Liverpool manager after shock Xabi Alonso decision

According to reports, Xabi Alonso is not a contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool; instead, the club is apparently considering two other options.

When Klopp declared in January that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023–2024 season, former player Alonso was immediately projected to take over as manager at Anfield.

But according to a recent report from Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph, the Spaniard is “unlikely” to be on the shortlist for a new manager.

After an incredible undefeated season, Alonso reportedly wants to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming campaign.

With 10 points more than Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, Leverkusen is poised to break through and win the league for the first time ever.

It seems like Alonso has unresolved business and wants to explore this fascinating side even more.

He had been a serious contender from the beginning, but since Alonso looks to be staying here, Liverpool is reportedly focused on Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The club has been putting together thorough dossiers on possible bidders, as the two are regarded as two of the most interesting coaches for the upcoming generation.

Real Madrid and Bayern, two of Alonso’s previous teams, have also been connected to him; however, the latter are not optimistic that they can convince him to leave Leverkusen.

Uli Hoeness, the honorary president of Bayern, stated, “I feel that it will be very difficult, not to say probably impossible, to sign Xabi Alonso.”

“I can definitely see him continuing to work at Bayer Leverkusen.”

“[Alonso] is more inclined to stay at Bayer Leverkusen in view of their current successes, because he would not want to leave them behind.

“Let’s say if he had two or three more years of success, it would probably be easier to bring him out of there.”
