Liverpool fans fume as Darwin Nunez denied penalty against Brighton
On social media, Liverpool supporters have been airing their resentment following Darwin Nunez’s penalty against Brighton & Hove Albion’s denial. Liverpool had the opportunity to take the lead in the Premier League standings on Sunday afternoon before Arsenal faced Manchester City. Since the top three teams in the Premier League are separated by just one point, the 23–24 season title battle is expected to be among the best in history.
Following Liverpool’s game against Brighton, City and Arsenal will square off at the Etihad Stadium, offering Jurgen Klopp’s team the opportunity to take the lead.
But within two minutes of Danny Welbeck giving the visitors the lead, Anfield was astonished. Nunez went down inside the penalty area and called for a penalty as Liverpool attempted to equalise.
Replays showed a little tug by Brighton defender Pervis Estupinan but referee David Coote was unmoved.
Reacting on social media, one fan commented “That would have been given as a penalty against Liverpool any day of the week.”
Another tweeted: “Someone tell me why that’s a yellow card but it wasn’t a penalty for Nunez? they’re the exact same?”
A third fan added: “How is that a yellow for MacAllister but not a penalty against Nunez for twice the pull.”
Someone else wrote: “David Coote has given 2 fouls against Mac Allister which were the same contact as the penalty claim for Nunez… love the consistency.”
A fifth commented: “If What Mac Allister Did Was A Free Kick & A Yellow Card, That Was Absolutely A Penalty And A Yellow Card For The Pull On Nunez.”

Former Everton player Leon Osman stated during his analysis for BBC Radio 5 Live: “I don’t think that’s enough for a penalty, but there was panic on Estupinan’s face.”
Following a deficit, Liverpool tied the score in the 27th minute when Mohamed Salah’s header was flicked in by Luis Diaz.
