Richard Keys says Xabi Alonso ‘bottled’ huge Liverpool decision because of one simple reason

Richard Keys suggests that there is a straightforward explanation for why Xabi Alonso hesitated in making a decision about his future. In January, Jurgen Klopp surprised many by announcing his departure as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, sparking widespread speculation about his successor.

Among the contenders, former Liverpool midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso emerged as a frontrunner for the position, alongside several other coaches who were also linked to the role.

Alonso has achieved remarkable success with Bayer Leverkusen this season, guiding the German club to the brink of their first-ever Bundesliga title while implementing an attractive style of play. However, Liverpool fans were left disappointed when Alonso announced on Friday that he would not be leaving Leverkusen this summer.

In his statement, the Spaniard expressed his commitment to continuing his work at Bayer, emphasizing his desire to help the club and its players develop further. Despite the allure of potential opportunities elsewhere, Alonso believes that staying at Leverkusen is the best decision for his future as a young coach.

While Alonso’s decision has garnered praise for his dedication and long-term vision, veteran broadcaster Richard Keys expressed a differing opinion. Keys suggested on beIN Sports that Alonso’s choice was a significant error, highlighting the rare availability of managerial positions at top clubs like Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and possibly Real Madrid.

“Right now he could have his pick. At no other point in his career going forward will he be in this luxurious position again.”

In an attempt to explain the rationale behind Alonso’s decision, Keys said: “I would question the size of his cojones.

“Leverkusen will never again have a season like this. Bayern Munich next year will make sure that they have another decade of domination in German football.

“Right now his stock is as high as it will ever be and his opportunities are as broad and as great as they will ever be, and I think he has bottled it.”
