Liverpool set new Premier League record in Sheffield United win to boost title bid
Liverpool achieved a new Premier League milestone during their triumph over Sheffield United on Thursday.
Despite pressure mounting after victories by Manchester City and Arsenal the previous night, Jurgen Klopp’s team secured a crucial win at Anfield.
Goals from Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo propelled Liverpool to a 3-1 victory, reclaiming their position at the summit of the Premier League standings.
Nunez capitalized on a fortunate opportunity by blocking Ivo Grbic’s clearance to open the scoring, but an own goal by Conor Bradley brought Sheffield United level just before the hour mark. A powerful strike from Mac Allister restored Liverpool’s lead, and a late header from Gakpo sealed the victory, propelling Liverpool back to the top of the standings.
Despite occasional challenges from Sheffield United, Klopp’s team controlled the game, registering nine shots on target out of a total of 29 attempts and completing 708 passes compared to their opponent’s 80.
Remarkably, Liverpool broke a Premier League possession record, commanding an impressive 83.1% possession. The previous record was set by Liverpool almost two years prior, during a 2-0 win against Everton in April 2022, where they held 83% possession. Manchester City also held the previous record with 83% possession in April 2018 when they defeated Swansea City 5-0.
With 70 points and eight games remaining, Liverpool lead the Premier League title race. Arsenal sit in second place with 68 points following their 2-0 win over Luton Town, while Manchester City trail in third with 67 points after a 4-1 victory against Aston Villa.
