Liverpool ‘decide to opt’ for shock Ruben Amorim alternative who’s wanted by three European powerhouses

Liverpool have opted for an unexpected alternative to Ruben Amorim for this summer. Xabi Alonso was initially the frontrunner to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, following the German’s announcement of his departure from the Merseyside club at the end of the season.

However, when the Spaniard confirmed his commitment to Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen last week, it was widely reported that Liverpool had redirected their attention to Sporting boss Amorim.

Reports originating from Portugal suggest that Liverpool are aiming to finalize a deal with Amorim before the conclusion of the season. However, the 39-year-old has expressed uncertainty about his future at Sporting, stating that he cannot provide any assurances regarding his tenure at the club. When questioned if he could emulate Bayer Leverkusen’s Alonso by confirming his stay, Amorim replied, “No, I can’t make any guarantees.”

While numerous publications have identified Amorim as the leading candidate for the managerial position at Anfield, Spanish outlet Nacional has asserted that Barcelona’s Xavi is also under consideration for the role at Liverpool. Similarly to Klopp, Xavi announced in January that he would be departing his role as head coach of Barcelona at the season’s end. Ajax and Borussia Dortmund have reportedly expressed interest in Xavi’s services, and the possibility of him replacing Klopp at Liverpool is gaining momentum.

Nacional further reported that Liverpool have ultimately decided to pursue Xavi, with all indications pointing towards his departure from Barcelona at the conclusion of the season.

Earlier this week, Amorim addressed his future by stating, “Sporting are handling their future, and I am unable to make a decision at this moment because I have given my word. I cannot backtrack on that commitment. Therefore, if I do not achieve success in winning trophies, I will depart Sporting.”

“That’s been very clear since the start. I felt it was important to get that across to the players because we have to win. We want to win trophies and we’ll decide on those things later.

“I’m not worried about that right now. The future has been planned for quite a long time. We’re all together as a club and looking into all situations and what we want for next season, so that’s the main reason why I can’t guarantee anything.

“I said that to my players and as the leader I can’t go back on my word, as hard as that may be. We have to win trophies, we’re on track to do that and that’s why it’s so important to win our next game.”
