Jamie Carragher picks out ‘the only consolation’ for Liverpool after dismal defeat by Atalanta

Jamie Carragher has identified one silver lining for Liverpool following their disappointing defeat by Atalanta. On Thursday night, Liverpool resumed their Europa League campaign by hosting Serie A side Atalanta at Anfield.

Despite high expectations for Liverpool’s performance, the outcome was disheartening.

Liverpool delivered a dismal performance, reminiscent of their collapse against Manchester United last weekend. Atalanta emerged victorious with a 3-0 win, courtesy of Gianluca Scamacca’s brace and a goal from Mario Pasalic.

Liverpool now face the daunting task of orchestrating one of their greatest European comebacks to advance to the Europa League semi-finals.

Despite the disappointing result, former Liverpool defender Carragher highlighted one positive aspect from the dismal night at Anfield on social media immediately after the final whistle.

Jurgen Klopp’s team is currently tied on points with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, but they are behind on goal difference.

Speaking after the match, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said: “It’s not great and a very disappointing evening of course. Too many individual mistakes, which we got punished for.

“We can’t dwell on it. In three days we play again. From tomorrow, we have to switch it back on to getting a result.”

The Dutchman then added: “If you don’t have belief, there’s no point in going to Italy.”

Before traveling to Italy next week, Liverpool must refocus on the Premier League as they host Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. It’s a must-win game for Liverpool if they are serious about their title aspirations.
