Xabi Alonso reveals the main reason why he rejected Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen stay

Xabi Alonso has disclosed the primary motive behind his decision to decline Liverpool’s offer in favor of remaining with Bayer Leverkusen. Since his arrival at the Bundesliga outfit, Alonso has orchestrated a remarkable transformation in Leverkusen’s performance.

This season, under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen has ascended to the summit of the Bundesliga standings and is on the brink of clinching the title.

Presently, Leverkusen holds a commanding 16-point lead over reigning champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Consequently, Alonso’s success at Leverkusen has sparked speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp, who is set to depart Anfield at the conclusion of the season.

Despite such rumors, Alonso recently reaffirmed his commitment to Leverkusen, stating, “I had a productive discussion with Bayer Leverkusen, and I communicated my decision to remain and continue with the club.”

“After a lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place for me.”

Now, in a recent interview conducted with TNT Sports, Alonso revealed why he has decided to continue with Bayern Leverkusen.

He said: “There were many reasons [for deciding to start at the club]. After one year, we’re building a team, we’re building a great spirit here.

“There were many reasons and so many players. The season has been great so far, and for sure we want to keep having this thing together.”

Alonso added: “I felt part of it. After one year, it didn’t feel like the right timing, and that’s why I’m committed.”

Speaking about West Ham United, Alonso also said: “We know that we are beatable, but we fight not to be beaten. For sure, the team has shown a great character.

“In tough situations, we have been able to deal with tough moments to win football games and with a great mentality to believe that we could make it to the last minute.”

He then  continued: “It wasn’t easy, but it’s down to our football, to our ideas, to our style to not put long balls in difficult situations, in an emergency, that we lose control.

“We want to understand why we do things, why do things happen. They do understand, the players. “It’s down to the players to decide what happens on the pitch, [we] try to help them to make the right ones.”

Following Xabi Alonso’s decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, reports suggest that Liverpool have shifted their focus to Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp.
