Liverpool fans acknowledge that they owe former striker Michael Owen an apology after a tweet of his resurfaced following their 3-0 defeat to Atalanta.

Jurgen Klopp’s aspirations of ending the season positively suffered a significant setback on Thursday night as Liverpool were humiliated at Anfield in their Europa League quarter-final first leg.

This defeat marked one of Liverpool’s worst at home in European competition, leaving them facing the possibility of elimination.

Liverpool now face the daunting task of mounting a remarkable comeback in the second leg in Italy on Thursday night if they are to advance to the semi-finals. Once again, Liverpool were inefficient in front of goal, with Darwin Nunez notably squandering several opportunities.

Nunez had a clear chance to put Liverpool ahead in the first half when he was played through on goal, but he could only chip his attempt off target, opting for a similar finish to his memorable lob against Brentford in the Premier League earlier this season.

At that time, former Liverpool striker Owen had praised Nunez’s technical ability but questioned his decision-making regarding the unorthodox finish.

“I mean, to even consider that finish is madness. It’s a 1 in 10, 2 in 10 finish at best,” he tweeted.

“Learning to slot, dink or go round the GK is a far more productive way to score and will increase his chances to 4 or 5 in 10, thus massively increasing his end return. I’m really not trying to rain on his parade as that goal was pure class.

“But I’d rather see it when Liverpool are 3-0 up, not at 0-0!”

Owen faced criticism at the time for questioning Nunez’s finish, and Liverpool fans now acknowledge that they owe the former England international an apology.

“He was spot on. I don’t know why people were clowning an actual Ballon d’Or winning striker,” posted one fan on X.

“That’s genuinely great analysis, as in that’s probably the most useful thing I’ve heard a British pundit say this season,” added another.

While a third person wrote: “He got cooked this day but he was 100% right players like [Nicolas] Jackson, Nunez and [Timo] Werner have no idea how to score your normal bottom corner finish that’s why they always miss it.”
