Paul Merson names transfer which would “take the pool” out of Liverpool

Paul Merson identified the single transfer that would significantly weaken Liverpool if it were to occur.

The Reds endured their second straight loss at Anfield on Sunday, with Eberechi Eze’s first-half goal adding to Jurgen Klopp’s team’s woes.

With Liverpool now winless in three matches, the defeat may have serious repercussions as they now trail league leaders Manchester City by two points with only six games left.

Klopp has confirmed his departure from the club at the season’s end, but Merson argues that the departure of key player Mo Salah would have a significant impact on the team.

Despite not being considered his best season, Salah has contributed impressively with 23 goals and 13 assists across all competitions.

Merson emphasizes that Liverpool cannot afford to lose the 31-year-old, considering the valuable statistics he brings to the team.

“If he goes wow, you could take the pool out of Liverpool,” the former Arsenal midfielder said, speaking on Sky Sports.

“You’re talking about a right winger putting up numbers like that.

“You’re talking about Saka, who’s a phenomenal footballer.

“He’s nowhere near those figures. Him and Martinelli had a breakout season last year.

“They didn’t score as many as Salah put together. And Liverpool finished nowhere.”

Al Ittihad, a Saudi Pro League team, reportedly made Mo Salah a priority signing and reportedly offered £200 million for his services in the summer.

It’s anticipated that Al Ittihad will make another attempt to sign the Roma player, especially as he’s nearing the end of his Liverpool contract. Jamie Carragher made an intriguing observation on Sky Sports, noting that Salah was “not performing up to his usual standard” against Crystal Palace and had been “off the mark” for several weeks.
