Ilkay Gundogan held nothing back in refreshingly honest post-match interview after Barcelona lose to PSG

Ilkay Gundogan was candid in his post-match interview following Barcelona’s devastating Champions League exit. Barca was knocked out of the competition after a 6-4 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Despite leading 3-2 going into the second leg clash, the La Liga giants saw their advantage grow when Raphinha scored in the 12th minute.

However, the match took a dramatic turn when Ronald Araujo was shown a red card for fouling Bradley Barcola, deemed to be the last man. Just 11 minutes after Araujo’s dismissal, Ousmane Dembele scored against his former team before the visitors added three more goals in the second half. Vitinha’s long-range strike leveled the tie on aggregate, while Kylian Mbappe capitalized on a moment of madness from Joao Cancelo, who conceded a penalty with a rash challenge in the box.

Mbappe converted the penalty and then scored his second goal of the game to secure a 4-1 victory on the night and a 6-4 aggregate win for PSG. Following the match, Gundogan, who played the entire 90 minutes, didn’t hold back in criticizing his teammates, particularly Araujo and Cancelo, for their decisions during the game.

“I didn’t see it, if he made a mistake he probably deserved to be sent off,” he told CBS Sports.

“In such crucial moments you have to be sure if you have a chance to get the ball. If you don’t have a chance, you have to move away. I don’t know if he got to the ball.

“It is better to give the striker a chance to confront the goalkeeper. He may miss it, or the goalkeeper may save us, or even concede a goal, because getting a red card at the beginning of the match will finish off your team and finish you off.”

The German also felt he deserved a penalty. He added: “I think I deserved a penalty. I was running and he clearly blocked me. I told the referee that it was a penalty, and I got a yellow card instead.” .
