Harry Maguire writes his name in Premier League history with record-breaking goal against Sheffield United

Harry Maguire etched his name into Premier League history with a record-breaking goal for Manchester United on Wednesday evening.
Despite narrowly advancing past Coventry City in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final on penalties, the Red Devils found themselves trailing 1-0 against bottom club Sheffield United at Old Trafford.
The opening goal came after Andre Onana’s unfortunate mistake, as he passed the ball directly to Jayden Bogle, who capitalized on the error by calmly slotting it past the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
United managed to equalize just before half-time courtesy of Maguire, who found the net for the second consecutive game since joining the 13-time Premier League winners.
In achieving this feat, Maguire has made history by scoring the 1,085th goal of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, setting a new record for the most goals in a 20-team, 38-game season.

With 45 games left to contribute to the tally, Maguire’s achievement stands as a remarkable individual feat. Despite United’s hopes that his heroics would inspire them, the visitors quickly found the net shortly after half-time courtesy of Ben Brereton-Diaz.
However, Bruno Fernandes restored parity with a penalty assisted by Maguire and then added a second goal to complete the turnaround, before Rasmus Hojlund sealed the win.
This season marks the first time in Premier League history that there has been an average of more than three goals per game, highlighting the excitement and attacking prowess on display.

The 2022/23 season saw a total of 1,084 goals scored, while the top five seasons for the most goals include 2018/19, 2021/22, and 2011/12 campaigns.
At the current pace, the ongoing campaign is on track to surpass all previous records, with a projected total of 1,231 goals.
