Xavi performs sensational u-turn to stay as Barcelona manager days after Real Madrid defeat

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has made a surprising reversal on his decision to depart from the club.

Earlier in January, the former Barcelona and Spain midfielder announced his intention to step down from his role at the end of the current season.

Xavi, aged 44, cited the mental stress and toll of the job since his appointment as manager in 2021 as reasons for his decision.

Reports from sources like Mundo Deportivo and Fabrizio Romano indicate that Xavi has reversed his decision to leave Barcelona. Allegedly, he has come to an agreement with Barcelona president Joan Laporta to extend his stay at the club until the end of his current contract in 2025.

This agreement reportedly followed a meeting at Laporta’s residence in Barcelona, attended by Xavi, Barca’s sporting director Deco, and board members Alejandro Echeverria and Rafael Yuste. Tensions have reportedly existed between Xavi and Deco since the latter’s appointment as sporting director last summer.

While Barcelona had been linked with Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, who is a target for Liverpool, Amorim has stated that he intends to continue his project in Lisbon.

This news comes shortly after Barcelona’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the recent Clasico, leaving them in second place in La Liga and 11 points adrift of the league leaders. With only six games remaining, Barcelona’s hopes of winning the title have diminished significantly.

Barcelona are poised to finish the season without any silverware after being eliminated in the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, as well as losing to Real Madrid in the final of the Supercopa de Espana. However, in his first full campaign in charge last season, Xavi guided Barcelona to the league title.
