Jurgen Klopp lays blame at one Liverpool player who ‘opened the door’ for Aston Villa collapse

Jurgen Klopp has subtly blamed one Liverpool star for his sides collapse at Villa Park, as they saw their 3-1 lead evaporate in the final minutes of the game.

Liverpool took control of the match with a commanding 3-1 lead, courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo, Jarrel Quansah, and an unfortunate own goal by Emi Martinez early in the game.

Despite Villa’s attempts to stage a comeback, including a disallowed goal from Ollie Watkins, they seemed destined for defeat. However, substitute Jhon Duran changed the game’s momentum with two crucial goals in the dying minutes.

Duran’s powerful long-range shot beat Alisson to secure his first goal, followed by a skillful flick over the goalkeeper after a pass from Moussa Diaby.

Following the match, Klopp expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, attributing their struggles to conceding too many chances before making substitutions.

While many blamed Alexis MacAllister for Villa’s second goal, Klopp singled out Virgil Van Dijk for a loose pass that led to Duran’s first goal, acknowledging the pivotal mistake.

Even though Liverpool is now mathematically eliminated from the title race, Klopp emphasized that his team remains fully focused, despite their unexpected loss of a commanding lead.

“We wanted to win the game. In the moment, when we gave away the 3-2, that was really tricky. That’s it, that’s the story of the game,” Klopp concluded.
