Why does one Everton fan always sit in Kop End at Anfield? Explained
Photos of a man wearing an Everton scarf and hat seated in the Kop End during today’s Merseyside derby are circulating on social media. Why would an Evertonian be among Liverpool fans?
This Toffees supporter is Steve Kelly. His brother Mike was a devoted Liverpool fan who died in the Hillsborough disaster. Steve takes Mike’s place at Anfield every derby day.
Mike Kelly was one of the last bodies identified at Hillsborough. Following the tragedy, Steve went to Sheffield to investigate and was questioned by the police. Believing he was aiding justice, Steve later realized his answers were used to portray Liverpool fans as drunk and disorderly.
Mike Kelly died in the Hillsborough disaster at the age of 34.
“Filling in forms ā did Mike like a drink? Did Mike go to the pub before the match? I didnāt realise I was helping make their case then,” Steve shared on Amnesty International’s In Their Own Words podcast.
“And I was so, so vulnerable. And I think they used that to their advantageā¦ We didnāt realise at the time, we were actually vilifying our families. We were giving them [the police] what they wanted.”
In the aftermath, Steve lost both his parents. His sister was deeply involved in the Hillsborough justice movement, and upon her passing, Steve took up her cause.
