Man Utd receive unwanted Alejandro Garnacho request which Erik ten Hag will have been desperate to avoid
Erik ten Hag has been dealt a challenging situation following Alejandro Garnacho’s request ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Manchester United capped off their season on a high note Saturday, preventing local rivals Manchester City from securing their second consecutive double.
Ten Hag led United to their worst-ever Premier League finish, ending the 38-game season in eighth place, making their FA Cup victory crucial for securing European football next season.
United couldn’t have had more deserving goalscorers in their 2-1 win at Wembley, with teenagers Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho scoring the decisive goals.
Both young players have established themselves as key starters for United this season, but the club could lose Garnacho this summer, placing United in a difficult position.
According to reports from TNT Sports Argentina, the Argentina national team has requested that United allow Garnacho to leave the club ahead of the new season to compete in the Olympic Games.
The tournament will run from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, critically overlapping with two weeks of pre-season when United will be preparing for a much-improved 2024/25 campaign.
This would potentially leave Garnacho with only one week’s rest before the Premier League season, which kicks off on August 17th.
United are unlikely to get Garnacho back early, as Javier Mascherano’s side is one of the favorites for the gold medal, following Brazil’s success in 2021.
The nation aims to bring a very strong squad to the Olympics, with the same report claiming Mascherano is awaiting responses from Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez and Aston Villa for Emi Martinez.
With United suffering significantly from injuries last season, the prospect of one of their biggest assets having virtually no rest before such a crucial season will be a major concern for Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
