What Man Utd’s 100,000 seat ‘Wembley of the North’ stadium could look like
New images of Manchester United’s proposed “Wembley of the North” stadium have emerged following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ambitious plan for a new Old Trafford. Ratcliffe, who recently acquired 25% of the club from the Glazers, aims to revolutionize United both on and off the pitch.
The idea of moving away from Old Trafford has sparked controversy among fans due to the stadium’s sentimental value, despite its evident need for refurbishment after years of neglect.
In an interview with The Independent back in March, Ratcliffe explained his push for a new stadium, emphasizing the extensive costs and benefits.
“We can refurbish the ground and have a fantastic stadium, which would cost about a billion,” Ratcliffe said. “But we have the opportunity to build a completely new, state-of-the-art ground with a capacity of 90,000 or even 100,000. This would provide a platform for major competitions in the north of England.”
Ratcliffe highlighted the outdated nature of Old Trafford, suggesting that a new stadium would be more fitting for Manchester United’s brand and stature. He referenced the ongoing developments at Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona as benchmarks for what United could achieve.
“You look at the Premier League, we don’t have anything that compares to the Bernabeu or Nou Camp. The Premier League is several times bigger than La Liga in terms of size and importance today. It’s time for us to have grounds that are the equal of our European competitors,” Ratcliffe added.
With the potential new stadium, Manchester United could host significant matches and events, revitalizing the club’s infrastructure and enhancing its global reputation. Fans and stakeholders eagerly await further developments on this transformative project.
