Xabi Alonso makes personal phone call to Liverpool target in attempt to hijack Arne Slot move

Xabi Alonso, once a Liverpool legend, might now cause the Reds some transfer market heartache. The Spanish manager, who led Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, their second German cup, and a Europa League final, decided to stay with his current club despite rumors linking him with a move to Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s departure after nearly nine years at Anfield.
With veteran defender Joel Matip set to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, new manager Arne Slot has been searching for a centre-back to rotate with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. VfB Stuttgart’s Waldemar Anton emerged as Slot’s primary target, following a season in which Anton made 37 appearances and helped Stuttgart secure 12 clean sheets as they finished second in the Bundesliga.

However, Alonso has reportedly made personal phone calls to Anton, attempting to persuade the 27-year-old to join Bayer Leverkusen instead of Liverpool. According to Sky Sports Germany, Alonso offered Anton a contract until 2028. Anton’s current deal with Stuttgart, which runs until 2027, includes a release clause between €20-25 million, making him available for negotiations if the clause is triggered.
Liverpool faces additional competition from Borussia Dortmund, who have also been in contact with Anton. Despite this, Liverpool and Stuttgart have a good relationship following the transfer of Wataru Endo last summer, suggesting that the Merseyside club remains in the running for Anton’s signature.
Anton has also caught the eye of Germany’s national team manager, Julien Nagelsmann, who included him in the 26-man squad for Euro 2024. Although Anton was an unused substitute in Germany’s 5-1 victory over Scotland, he may feature later in the tournament if Germany secures their place in the round of 16 with a win against Hungary.
While Bayer Leverkusen appears to be in pole position for Anton’s signature, Liverpool’s good relationship with Stuttgart and their need for defensive reinforcement keep them in the race. The coming weeks will be crucial as Anton decides his future amidst interest from top clubs and his ongoing participation in Euro 2024.
