Arne Slot’s Transfer Setback: Tottenham Poised to Beat Liverpool to Key Signing

Earlier this week, Arne Slot gave his inaugural interview as Liverpool boss following Jurgen Klopp’s departure. Now officially in charge, Slot is looking to strengthen the squad for the 2024/25 season. However, reports suggest he won’t be signing Feyenoord’s Lutsharel Geertruida, despite being a long-time admirer of the 23-year-old defender.

Geertruida, valued at around £25 million, is highly regarded in Europe after an impressive season in the Eredivisie. Slot’s hesitation to sign another Dutch player—following Erik ten Hag’s criticized strategy at Manchester United—has opened the door for Tottenham, who are keen to bring Geertruida to the Premier League amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Slot, while discussing his ambitions for Liverpool, expressed his desire to improve upon last season’s third-place finish. “I think in the end we would all love to see Liverpool a bit higher than third place and this is the challenge we are facing now – to build on from what we have,” he stated.

Slot emphasized the importance of understanding the players and their training culture, noting, “There are two things [why] to do this. Of course, to get to know more about the players because mostly you see them during the games. And you want to know also what the culture is, how they train and what they are used to.”

Despite the setback with Geertruida, Slot remains optimistic about his plans for Liverpool, aiming to implement his own training methods while learning from his predecessors.
