Man Utd close in on sensational Leny Yoro transfer after hijacking Real Madrid deal and could add another defensive signing

Lille defender Leny Yoro is close to making a significant decision regarding his future, with a £52 million transfer to Manchester United on the horizon. The 19-year-old centre-back, regarded as one of Europe’s top prospects, has been linked with multiple clubs, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain.

Initially, it seemed Real Madrid would secure Yoro for £33.8 million plus add-ons. However, on Wednesday, reports surfaced that Yoro is heading to the UK for a medical and to finalise personal terms with Manchester United. David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed an agreement between Lille and United for an initial €62 million (£52m) fee.

Despite preferring Real Madrid initially, Yoro has warmed to joining United, although final details are still being ironed out. Real Madrid’s reluctance to meet the agreed price between United and Lille paved the way for the move.

United fans are excited about Yoro’s potential addition. Last season, the teenager completed 1,727 passes in Ligue 1, the highest by a teenager in Europe’s big-five leagues in 2023-24.

Meanwhile, United continues to eye other targets like Matthijs de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite, but further arrivals depend on the futures of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. The club’s summer recruitment, boosted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ minority stake acquisition, started with Joshua Zirkee’s £36.5 million signing on Monday.
