On Saturday, the Yankee Stadium saw a Norwegian sensation perform. They received their wish, but it may not have been the one they expected.

Erling Haaland scored and received the loudest shouts of the night, but it was compatriot Oscar Bobb who outperformed his partner on tour. Another brilliant assist increased his total to three in two games, adding his goal against Celtic. Haaland has two strikes in a row, which is common for him even in preseason and worrisome for the upcoming season.

However, Bobb is leading the way out in the United States, as he did in Asia last year. He is the reason Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City does not need any new players, and he is making a strong case to be a true first-team starter this season.

Bobb earned a reputation last season for his ability to get out of tight circumstances, and now he’s reminding everyone of his ability to beat his opponent one-on-one, something he learned in the academy. Guardiola has previously praised Savinho and Jeremy Doku’s abilities in that area. Just as against Celtic, Bobb thrilled the audience by dropping a shoulder, finding an additional yard of pace, and putting the ball into Haaland’s path to score.

It was the same play and finish as Maximo Perrone’s goal against Celtic, but while Haaland received applause, Bobb was the architect again. When he slid into midfield, gathered a one-two, and shot for the bottom corner, it appeared like he would score, but his compass was slightly wrong for the first time all summer.

The Haaland-Bobb partnership has produced four of City’s five pre-season goals in just 113 minutes, with the two players appearing to understand each other’s thoughts. That type of collaboration is invaluable, especially because most of Guardiola’s top attackers are still on vacation.

Guardiola, on the other hand, was quickly gesticulating violently at his young full-backs on the pitch. He was dissatisfied after Celtic scored three consecutive goals in North Carolina and dropped Kalvin Phillips as a result. Samuel Chukwueze twice slipped a cross past Rico Lewis and Callum Doyle, Lorenzo Colombo had a chance at the back post, and Ederson twice allowed the ball pass through his body. Whether friendly or not, the management was unhappy.

Ederson, returned after Guardiola said he wants his goalkeeper to stay, has been unhappy on tour, with some reports about his attitude at the conclusion of the season. He stated that he “stays concentrated on the preparation of the season,” although he did not appear particularly attentive in the Bronx. Captain for the night, he had made two major stops prior to his mistakes.

Colombo’s shots were difficult to defend, but he will be frustrated with himself. Staying on for the second half to cement his position as No.1, Ederson improved after the interval but limped off after conceding a third, with Scott Carson happily taking his place.

Micah Hamilton, who came in at halftime, set up McAtee’s equaliser. He is another player who, like Bobb, will benefit from scoring this month while also justifying Guardiola’s transfer position.

Despite New York’s large Italian population, the majority of the 46,000-strong audience supported City. This famous site, with covered baseball mounds taking up a quarter of the pitch, was clearly not for football. Before the game, Pep Guardiola had a lengthy meeting with Milan manager Paolo Fonseca, followed by a brief reunion with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He met Andre Agassi in New York on Friday; perhaps Zlatan was next on his schedule.

Ibrahimovic used to be the center of attention at arenas like Yankee Stadium. Haaland is the major guy commercially these days, and he appears in fine shape thus far, having rested at the midway point in New York.

However, Bobb has been hitting the ball out of the park whenever he comes up to the plate in the United States.
