Arsenal has not yet submitted a formal bid for Real Sociedad’s star midfielder, according to the Spanish outlet El Diario Vasco. The Gunners are in the market for a new midfielder this transfer window and are said to have agreed on personal terms with Mikel Merino. Although an official offer has not been made, it is expected soon.
Merino, who has a release clause of £52 million, could potentially be acquired for £26 million due to his contract entering its final year. The 28-year-old midfielder might join Arsenal in the coming days.
Arsenal’s summer transfer window has been relatively quiet so far, with only the signings of David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori. After finishing as runners-up in the Premier League for the second consecutive season, more transfer activity was anticipated. However, the recent sale of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham has provided additional funds that could be used towards Merino’s transfer.
Merino has expressed a strong interest in joining Arsenal, and the club now needs to negotiate an appropriate transfer fee for the Euro 2024 winner. He would be a valuable addition to the left-sided central midfield role, having led Europe’s top-five leagues in duels won during the 2023/24 season. Additionally, Merino displayed significant skills in recoveries, tackling, and creativity, contributing eight goals and five assists in the previous campaign.
Arsenal will need to move quickly, as Merino is also considering a potential move to Barcelona.
