Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has joined this shocking European Club for a year contract worth over £2 million

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has completed a free transfer to Italian club Fiorentina.

De Gea’s 12-year tenure at Old Trafford ended last summer when the Spaniard departed as his contract expired, having failed to agree on an extension. The circumstances of his departure were controversial. While some United fans wanted De Gea to sign a new deal, others believed the club should move on due to concerns about his distribution and ability to play out from the back.

After leaving United, De Gea drew interest from Saudi Arabia but declined the chance to play in the Middle East, spending the entire 2023/24 season as a free agent.

Following his medical on Friday, the goalkeeper will be officially announced as a Fiorentina player before the weekend, with the Serie A season starting next week. Fiorentina finished ninth in Italy’s top league last season and lost in the Conference League final for the second consecutive year.

Former United loanee Sofyan Amrabat remains with the Florence club. Amrabat delayed his return to Fiorentina’s pre-season this summer in an effort to force a move to United, although Italian media have reported that he has recently resumed training.

United requires a midfielder before the transfer window closes on August 30, and Erik ten Hag had been considering the possibility of signing Amrabat with technical director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada last month.

United still views Amrabat as a potential signing, so acquiring him remains an option; thus, the possibility of the player securing his desired move to Old Trafford is still alive.

Many believed De Gea would retire after failing to find a new club last season, but Fiorentina offered him the chance for another chapter in his career. De Gea was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year four times and won the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Europa League with United. He kept 190 clean sheets and made a club-record 545 appearances for a goalkeeper, leading to speculation about a testimonial at Old Trafford when he retires.
