As reported by the Portuguese outlet Record, Arsenal has started talks with Sporting Lisbon about a possible transfer for striker Viktor Gyokeres.

This summer, Arsenal has already added David Raya (on an initial loan with an option for a permanent deal) and Riccardo Calafiori to their squad. However, further signings are anticipated before the transfer window shuts on August 30.

The Gunners have been consistently linked with bringing in a new striker, and Record indicates that informal discussions between Arsenal and Sporting have occurred in recent weeks about potentially bringing Gyokeres to the Emirates. Nonetheless, Sporting has made it clear they will not entertain any offer below the striker’s £86 million release clause.

Last season, Arsenal came close to winning the Premier League title, finishing just two points behind Manchester City. Although they performed strongly in the latter part of the season, costly losses to Aston Villa and lackluster showings against Newcastle United, Fulham, and West Ham United highlighted a need for more finishing power in attack. A striker with Gyokeres’ abilities could provide the sharpness Arsenal needs in the forward line.

The Swedish forward had an exceptional season with Sporting, netting 43 goals and delivering 15 assists in 50 matches. His goal-scoring talent and ability to create opportunities would make him a valuable addition to Arsenal’s team.

Arsenal’s main hurdle is whether they can finance the signing. The club is conscious of its financial constraints under the Premier League’s spending rules. Recently, they signed Riccardo Calafiori following the sale of Emile Smith Rowe, and their pursuit of Mikel Merino depends on the sale of Eddie Nketiah. Another major player departure may be necessary to fund a move for Gyokeres.

Arsenal must move swiftly if they want to sign Gyokeres, as Sporting might be reluctant to discuss payment terms without ample time to find a replacement before the transfer window closes on August 30.
