đ¨â˝Man United set sights on ÂŁ17m ânext James Rodriguezâ but facing big issuesâŚ.âWhy Manchester United did not sign Richard Rios this summer

Manchester United were reportedly interested in signing Richard Rios, a 23-year-old Colombian midfielder often compared to James Rodriguez due to his style of play and potential. Rios, who currently plays for Palmeiras in Brazil, caught the attention of several European clubs with his impressive performances, leading to United considering a move for him during the summer transfer window. His valuation was estimated to be around ÂŁ17 million.
However, despite the interest, Manchester United faced several obstacles that prevented the deal from materializing. One of the primary issues was related to work permit regulations, which have become increasingly stringent post-Brexit, making it difficult for non-European players to secure the necessary documentation. This regulatory hurdle posed a significant challenge, as Rios’s international experience was limited, impacting his eligibility under the points-based system required for a work permit.
Additionally, Manchester United’s focus on other midfield targets, such as Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina and the recently signed Manuel Ugarte from PSG, shifted the club’s attention away from Rios. United prioritized experienced players who could provide immediate impact, which contributed to the decision not to pursue Rios further.
While Rios remains a promising talent, these factors ultimately led Manchester United to pass on signing him this summer. The club may continue to monitor his progress, but for now, their midfield reinforcements will come from other avenues.
