### Five Key Arsenal Players Miss Training Ahead of Champions League Opener
Arsenal faces potential issues ahead of their UEFA Champions League debut against Atalanta, with five key players missing from first-team practices. The absences could complicate manager Mikel Arteta’s selection for the crucial match on Thursday.
The team, fresh off a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby, is set to travel to Italy on Wednesday afternoon. Concerns are mounting about the availability of several first-team players who missed today’s session at the Sobha Realty Training Center.
Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori, recovering from a calf injury sustained during international duty, was seen training and is expected to travel with the squad. Bukayo Saka also participated fully, despite leaving the Spurs game early due to cramps.
However, captain Martin Ødegaard and midfielder Mikel Merino were notably absent, continuing their recovery from ankle and shoulder injuries, respectively. Defenders Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu were also missing, adding to Arteta’s defensive concerns. Kieran Tierney’s absence due to a hamstring injury from the Euros further complicates the situation.
To address these gaps, Arsenal’s young players, including Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Zane Monlouis, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, and Josh Robinson, were called up to train with the first team.
Arsenal’s Champions League campaign includes eight group stage matches, with a challenging schedule that features fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Sporting CP, AS Monaco, GNK Dinamo, and Girona. Arteta will be hoping for positive updates on his injured players before the high-stakes clash with Atalanta.
