Liverpool were back in Premier League action on Saturday as they faced Bournemouth at Anfield.

The Reds bounced back from a really poor result in the league last week by beating AC Milan in Europe on Tuesday.

But having seen their perfect league start ruined by Nottingham Forest, only a win would do as the Cherries came to town.

It was not the best start for Liverpool, though, with Antoine Semenyo slotting home past Caoimhin Kelleher after just three minutes.

There was a sense of Deja vu to the Semenyo goal; the same player put Bournemouth ahead at the same stage of the match last season. However, there was a sting in the tail for the Cherries forward, as the goal was ruled out.

After that, Liverpool almost wobbled again. Kelleher was a little slow to clear the ball, leading to a charge down from Evanilson. Thankfully, the Irishman quickly made amends as he proved what a capable stand in he is for Alisson Becker.

Caoimhin Kelleher makes ‘big’ save

After the early wobble at Anfield, Liverpool did steady the ship soon after. A quick fire Luis Diaz double before the half hour mark saw them into a 2-0 lead.

Before Diaz’s first, however, there was a moment of real worry at the Kop end.

Having been charged down by Evanilson, Kelleher’s clearance came straight back to him.

Faced once again with Semenyo almost in his six yard box, the 25-year-old stood up firm this time. Kelleher slid to make a superb block and send the ball over the bar for a corner.

Commenting on the incident for BBC Sport, pundit Chris Sutton said that while it was initially a poor piece of play from Kelleher, he did at least make up for it.

“There’s more of a pattern to this game, Bournemouth are being really aggressive with their approach,” says the former Celtic striker.

“Kelleher makes amends for his early mistake. A clever little deft pass from Semenyo and it’s a big save on his right side.”

Liverpool click into gear against Bournemouth

One look at the score line at half-time at Liverpool fans who hadn’t watched the game would be forgiven for thinking it was a stroll in the park.

However, the match against the Cherries was anything but. Bournemouth could easily have been ahead by the time Diaz struck.

Even after the second goal for the Colombian, Andoni Iraola’s side continued to look threatening. Once the third went in, things became a little more difficult for Bournemouth.

Nevertheless, Kelleher’s save on Semenyo was a big, big moment in the game. Had Liverpool gone behind, frustration and worry could have enveloped Anfield.

Instead, the Reds went up the other end and virtually put the game beyond their opponents
