Gary Neville has criticized the Premier League, calling them “bullies” and describing the organization as “entitled” and “selfish” in the ongoing debate about the introduction of an independent football regulator.
Neville has expressed his strong support for the idea, suggesting that an independent regulator would protect English football fans and ensure financial stability across the sport. The Football Governance Bill, introduced by the Conservatives in March and supported by Labour, aims to establish such a regulator. This proposal gained momentum after the Super League controversy, with the government arguing that it would safeguard football clubs.
If passed, the bill would provide a regulator with the authority to intervene in football matters when necessary. Despite the push for this, the Premier League has shown resistance, with its CEO, Richard Masters, warning that the introduction of a regulator poses a “risk” to the league. However, Labour has dismissed concerns that English clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, would be banned from European competitions, emphasizing the regulator’s independence.
At a Labour event, Neville condemned the Premier League’s hesitation and suggested that their mindset is that of a “bully,” hoarding resources and distributing minimal benefits to smaller clubs. He accused them of trying to use their influence to undermine the regulator and spreading fear to maintain their position.
In response to Neville’s comments, the Premier League defended itself, stating that discussions with the government are ongoing. CEO Masters expressed concern that the new regulations could diminish the league’s global success and competitiveness, warning that regulation could hurt the Premier League’s appeal and disrupt the balance of the game. Masters also pointed out that competitors without similar restrictions could benefit if the Premier League is constrained, and that imposing regulation could deter the investors who help maintain the league’s position as a global leader in football.
