Premier League make decision over Erling Haaland punishment for Gabriel incident after reviewing VAR footage
The Premier League has made a final decision regarding whether to take action against Erling Haaland for an incident involving Gabriel Magalhaes during the 2-2 draw between Manchester City and Arsenal.
The incident took place moments after John Stones scored a 98th-minute equalizer to secure a point for City at the Etihad Stadium.
After retrieving the ball from the net, Haaland threw it off the back of Gabriel’s head before catching it again.
The Norwegian then collided with Thomas Partey just seconds after play resumed, sparking a mass confrontation between both teams.
Neither incident was penalized by the referee, although the incident involving Gabriel went unnoticed at the time.
The Premier League decided to review footage of the Gabriel incident to determine if any retrospective action was necessary.
Since referee Michael Oliver did not notice the incident on the pitch, the Premier League had the option to issue Haaland a suspension or warning.
Had the referee spotted the incident and taken action during the game, there would have been no need for an investigation.
However, according to The Telegraph’s Jack Gaughan, the Premier League concluded that the footage did not warrant any retrospective punishment, allowing Haaland to avoid any sanctions.
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey suggested that Haaland was “very lucky” the referee and VAR missed the incident.
Speaking to The Sun, he said: “You could argue it’s violent conduct, as it’s like he’s throwing an object at someone’s head. Itās similar to throwing a punch at someone’s head.
“So he can count himself very lucky that Michael Oliver didnāt see it, and VAR didnāt pick it up either. It could be considered violent conduct.”
