Luke Shaw has been having serious Injury problems. We can’t have that type of player here. He can’t play up to 10 games each season. We need to secure the talented Spanish Left-back before he decides to go back to Real Madrid”-Erik ten Hag makes his feelings clear after finding perfect Luke Shaw alternative at Manchester United after contacting the player and his agent
Luke Shaw is regarded as Manchester United’s main left-back when in good health. However, manager Erik ten Hag has suggested that a long-term replacement could be considered after a recent display in that position.
Shaw arrived at United in 2014 as one of the most promising young talents in football. Now aged 29, he has played 275 games for the club, netting four goals and winning both the FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, his career has been disrupted by recurring injuries, including a significant double leg break in 2015 during a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven.
This season, Shaw is yet to feature due to injury, with his last United appearance occurring in February, when he played in a win over Luton Town. Despite missing club matches, he was still named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024. Shaw’s contract with United extends until 2027, and the team has alternative left-back options such as Tyrell Malacia and Noussair Mazraoui. Although Mazraoui was signed from Bayern Munich as a right-back, his adaptability allows him to cover both flanks.
A new contender for the left-back role is 20-year-old Toby Collyer. Predominantly a holding midfielder, Collyer has played three matches this season, making his first-team debut in the Community Shield loss to Manchester City. He also came off the bench in a 3-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool.
Collyer made his first start for United in the Carabao Cup third-round tie, where he played left-back in a dominant 7-0 win over League One’s Barnsley. This victory, United’s largest under Ten Hag, has brought attention to Collyer’s potential in that position.
Reflecting on Collyer’s performance at left-back, Ten Hag said, “It was his first time playing as a left-back—he’s had some training experience there, but this was his debut in the position. He started a little nervously, but as the match progressed, he found his groove, and the team’s shape improved.”
Collyer’s impressive performance may give Ten Hag an important option as he plans future squad developments.
