Arne Slot aims cheeky dig at Liverpool star in post-match interview after Wolves win
Liverpool manager Arne Slot made a light-hearted remark about one of his players following their 2-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux.
The Reds secured the win thanks to Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty, which came just minutes after Wolves equalized through Rayan Ait Nouri’s close-range effort. Earlier in the match, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate opened the scoring with a header just before half-time, though he was involved in the error that led to Wolves’ goal.
Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was awarded Player of the Match for his strong performance, but in a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Konate humorously suggested that he deserved the award for scoring. When presenter David Jones asked Slot for his opinion, the manager, smiling, responded with a cheeky dig: “Okay. Then maybe he forgot the moment we conceded the goal – maybe he wasn’t there at the time! Maybe that’s why we conceded; because he wasn’t there. To say the least, it was avoidable, let’s put it that way.”
The win took Liverpool to the top of the Premier League by the end of Saturday, helped by Manchester City dropping points earlier in the day. The Reds have won five of their opening six games, with their only defeat being a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield earlier in the month.
Reflecting on the match, Slot acknowledged the challenge posed by Wolves: “I don’t think we started off well, but credit to Gary O’Neil and Wolves for their solid game plan. We had some issues in the first 15 to 20 minutes, but after that, I think we controlled the game. It wasn’t a surprise when we scored [Konate’s goal before half-time], especially since we had a big chance with Dominik Szoboszlai just before that.”
