Joan Laporta and Deco are continuing their work on planning Barcelona’s squad, and they are considering the potential return of a former player who struggled to settle during his initial spell at the club. Barcelona currently leads La Liga with 21 points from eight matches, with their only defeat coming against Osasuna, leaving them four points behind Real Madrid.

According to *El Nacional*, young midfielder Nico GonzĆ”lez, who is currently performing exceptionally well at Porto, could be an option for a return. Nico, a product of Barcelonaā€™s La Masia academy, initially left the club after failing to secure a regular spot in the first team. Following a loan spell at Valencia, he joined Porto in 2023 for ā‚¬8.5 million, with Barcelona retaining 40% of any future sale and a ā‚¬30 million buy-back clause valid until 2025.

This season, Nico’s career at Porto has taken a significant upturn under coach VĆtor Bruno, after a challenging time under Sergio ConceiĆ§Ć£o last year. He has featured in all nine official matches this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist, playing in a more advanced role that has allowed him to shine closer to the oppositionā€™s goal.

Barcelona is closely monitoring Nicoā€™s progress, with Deco, the club’s sporting director, recognizing his potential. Current Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is also expected to welcome the return of a player like Nico, who could form a dynamic partnership with Gavi in midfield, adding depth and versatility to the squad.
