Ballon d’Or 2024 : « It deserves it », Lionel Messi reveals his favorite

Less than two weeks remain until the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, and while several players are listed as favorites, Lionel Messi’s personal choice goes in a completely different direction. The Argentina captain has revealed his pick for the Ballon d’Or, and it’s quite a surprise to many.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 28. A total of 30 players are in contention, but only one will take home the prize in just a few days. According to various media outlets and experts, three main favorites have emerged: Vinicius Jr., Rodri, and Dani Carvajal. Additionally, Jude Bellingham is also expected to be a contender. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland seem to be out of the spotlight in this race.
However, when it comes to Messi’s favorite, he hasn’t chosen any of these players. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner instead picked a player who is not even considered a top 3 or top 5 candidate this year. Messi has thrown his support behind his friend and teammate from the national team.
It may seem unusual, but it’s also a show of support for his compatriot. Messi’s number one choice is Lautaro Martinez, who had an excellent season with Inter Milan and also won the Copa America, scoring in the final. For Messi, Martinez deserves the Ballon d’Or. And even if he doesn’t win it this year, Messi hopes that one day he will.
“He had an outstanding year, scoring in the final and finishing as the top scorer of the Copa America. He deserves the Ballon d’Or more than anyone. I hope Martinez wins it; he deserves it more than anyone. If it doesn’t happen now, I’m sure the recognition will come later,” Messi said.
