Jamie Carragher sparked controversy on social media after questioning whether PGMOL chief Howard Webb had influenced the decision to upgrade William Saliba’s yellow card to a red during Arsenal’s clash with Bournemouth. Saliba had initially been cautioned by referee Rob Jones for fouling Evanilson in the first half of Saturday’s Premier League fixture at the Vitality Stadium. However, VAR intervened, leading to the upgrade of the yellow to a red card.

The dismissal means Saliba will miss Arsenal’s crucial match against Liverpool next weekend. Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, took to social media to suggest Webb may have played a role in the decision, after being seen speaking on his phone in the crowd.

Following the red card, Arsenal fans voiced their frustration, chanting against Webb and the PGMOL. The match was still goalless at halftime, but Saliba’s early exit added another problem for Mikel Arteta, who is already dealing with injuries to key players, including Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka.

The Premier League later released a statement clarifying the reasoning behind the decision. According to the statement, VAR recommended an on-field review after determining that Saliba had denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. This led to the referee upgrading the yellow card to a red, compounding Arsenal’s woes in an already challenging match.
