Gary Neville begins new Man Utd job days after Sir Alex Ferguson was axed by club

Gary Neville appears to have taken on a new role at Manchester United, just days after Sir Alex Ferguson’s long-standing involvement with the club came to an end. Earlier this week, reports emerged that Ferguson, United’s most successful manager, was being removed from his position after over a decade as a director and global ambassador.

Since retiring in 2013, Ferguson remained active at Old Trafford in these roles, earning £2.16 million annually. However, INEOS chief and United shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly informed Ferguson in person that this arrangement would be terminated as part of a cost-cutting strategy. Although Ferguson will continue as a non-executive director, it’s been reported that he will no longer be allowed to enter the dressing room. This decision has divided fans and media alike.

Commenting on the news, current manager Erik ten Hag remarked, “Of course it has an impact on us, Sir Alex is Man United.”

While Ferguson’s ambassadorial duties have ended, his former captain Gary Neville was seen working in a similar capacity over the weekend. According to The Sun, Neville, who played 602 times for United, was working as a freelance ambassador for the club, despite being heavily involved in broadcasting with Sky Sports and NBC, as well as his various business ventures, including Salford City.

Neville was spotted in India at the Minerva Academy in Mohali, participating in the Apollo Tyres grassroots football program while wearing an official United polo. He also remains involved with United as part of the club’s stadium taskforce. On Sunday, Neville returned to his broadcasting role, commentating on the Liverpool vs Chelsea match at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Ferguson was absent from Old Trafford during United’s victory over Brentford, opting instead to watch his former club Aberdeen face Celtic.
