Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to appoint Ruben Amorim as their new manager.
The club is seeking its first permanent manager under INEOS ownership following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday. United’s co-owners, who now oversee football operations at Old Trafford, have faced criticism for retaining Ten Hag after last season’s eighth-place finish—their lowest in the top flight since 1990. However, they may now be making a bold decision that could bring a positive shift in mood at Old Trafford.
Amorim would undoubtedly be a gamble. The 39-year-old has no experience managing outside Portugal, a league considered below the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga in terms of competition.
Despite this, his success with Sporting CP is noteworthy, as he led them to a historic title, amassing 85 points with only one loss in the season, ending a nearly two-decade title drought. Three years later, the club secured another league title under his management.
While achieving similar success at United would be a significantly tougher task, ending Sporting’s lengthy title drought suggests to United’s leadership that Amorim might bring that same winning formula to Manchester.
This situation mirrors that of United’s legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who arrived from Aberdeen and, after years of rebuilding, ended a 26-year wait for a top-flight title in the inaugural Premier League season of 1992/93.
