Ferguson signed the contract when he retired in 2013 and has regularly attended the clubās matches since then. To save costs, Ratcliffe informed the 82-year-old that his salary of over Ā£2 million would be coming to an end.
Reports indicate that Ferguson was personally informed of this decision. Sources say the conversation was friendly and that there are no conflicts between the club and Ferguson, who continues to serve as a non-executive director.
Ferguson and Ratcliffe met on Sunday afternoon in Manchester during the match against Chelsea for the first time since this decision, and there seemed to be no negative feelings between the two.
