“Liverpool have already had one game against a historic rival delayed this season, and now there’s a significant chance of that happening once more.

The Reds were set to play Everton in the final league derby at Goodison Park in early December, but the match was postponed on the morning of the fixture due to the severe impact of Storm Darragh. Mid-February has been provisionally suggested for the rescheduling.

Arne Slot’s team now faces the real possibility of a similar situation as adverse weather conditions again threaten to disrupt the season.

According to the Evening Standard on Saturday morning, concerns are mounting that Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester United might be postponed.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for Merseyside, forecasting ‘snow and freezing rain’ and advising public transport users to prepare for disruptions. In some parts of the UK, snow up to 40cm thick is expected.

The amber warning extends until 11:59pm on Sunday, with the Met Office predicting a temperature of 1°C (feels like -2°C) for 4:30pm tomorrow, the scheduled kickoff time.

If the game proceeds, fans traveling to Anfield are advised to bring warm clothing, food, water, blankets, and ice scrapers.

Safety comes first, but a postponement would hurt Liverpool

Currently, Liverpool have two matches per week until mid-February when they are scheduled to have consecutive midweeks off, though one of those could accommodate the rescheduled Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

If the Reds, as expected, bypass the Champions League play-off round, the Man United fixture could theoretically be moved to January if it is postponed. However, this would be ruled out if Ruben Amorim’s side competes in the Europa League play-offs.

In that case, the match could be pushed back to April, though further progress in European competitions and the FA Cup could reduce the available dates for rescheduling.

Liverpool’s fans and players will want the match to proceed as planned, particularly given their strong form, while Manchester United are struggling in 14th place after losing five of their last six league matches.

Nonetheless, public safety is paramount, and if the conditions render travel for staff, fans, and players too hazardous, the authorities might have no choice but to postpone the game.
